Allen Tener – Golf Operations Manager

Allen is a rare kind … a true Floridian, born and raised in Lakeland, Fla. Happily married to his high school sweetheart, he enjoys spending time with his three children.

Allen joined Blair Group’s team starting in the Big Cypress Pro Shop at Cypress Lakes back in August, 1998. Working here and serving the residents has always been a strong focus of Allen’s. He believes in providing stellar customer service; always striving to display a positive attitude.

When he’s not working or out on the links, you can most likely find Allen standing around a lake with a fishing pole in his hand, waiting for a bass to bite.

Heidi Aittama – Golf Shop Manager

A former resident of Michigan, Heidi moved to the Sunshine State in July of 2014 to join her family and escape the blustery winters.

She started golfing at the age of 10 just by luck … Her father played a little tennis and a little golf and made her choose one. By the age of 11, Heidi starting playing in tournaments joining the Powerbilt tour in Michigan. She continued on this tour until she entered high school where she was a four-year player on Churchill’s ladies’ varsity golf team where she became the first to make the Michigan State Finals, later qualifying four consecutive years in a row.

After graduating, Heidi temporarily moved to Wesley Chapel, FL where she attended the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy for eight months … what a great experience with wonderful memories.

Heidi then moved back to Michigan where she accepted a golf scholarship to Ferris State University and entered the Professional Golf Management program. She played on the Ferris State women’s golf team for the next three years.

Needing a break from the sport, Heidi followed her love of animals and spent the next 10 years as a PetSmart groomer. She later transferred to the Lakeland PetSmart where she helped establish the new store and became Pet Salon Manager.

Not long after, the itch to golf was back … She joined the Cypress Lakes family in 2016 first working in the Grill where she became a resident favorite, and also became a member or the golf club where she still remains dedicated to the game.

In 2019, Heidi joins the Golf Shop team as manager where she continues to serve the community. She is USGTF certified in teaching professional golf, bringing knowledge and skills to the members and residents of Cypress Lakes. Her lessons and clinics have been very popular with both men and women—from absolute beginners to the most experienced golfers who are just looking to shave off a stroke or two from their game.

Tom McGorty – Golf Membership Director

Tom moved with his fiancé, Lora from Fort Collins, CO to Winter Springs, FL in July 2014. After deciding they could actually tolerate the Florida summers, the purchased their home in Cypress Lakes in November that same year.

Before coming to work at Big Cypress Golf Club, Tom previously worked for an Internet Sports & Marketing company specializing in website development and online registration. A major client of the company was Little League Baseball & Softball and they we looking for a specific skill set to work with them. At the time, Tom was the Director of Technology at a K-12 school district in Michigan and very active in his community volunteering at various times, as President, Player Agent, Coach and Umpire. Tom’s Little League experience was just what the company was looking for and he was recruited to fill the position. … Tom traveled around the country to train local leagues on how to a create website and online registration, making it easier for parents to register their children each year. In 2001, Tom’s commitment to umpiring lead him to being selected as one of 16 from around the world to umpire in the Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, PA. He was the home plate umpire for the US Championship game and was the first base umpire for the championship game between Japan and the US with President George W. Bush looking on in the stands.

Tom brings a wealth of experience to Big Cypress Golf Club. From computer, photography, video editing skills, to flying his drone around the community and golf courses (he provides the covers for the monthly community newsletter), foremost is his customer service dedication to members and residents alike.

Gary-NewcombGary Newcomb – Golf Course Superintendent

Gary Newcomb is GCSAA certified and holds an Associate of Science Degree in Golf Course Operations from Lake City Community College. Gary is a Florida native with three year’s turf grass experience in Virginia. His focus is maintaining high-level playing conditions while staying committed to long term sustainability.

When not working alongside his crew, Gary can be seen at the range working on his game or doing a quick turf test playing nine holes before calling it a day.
